Last week, we got to know Amanda, the owner of Rough Draft Solutions. This week, we wanted to focus on the two other team members of the business, Emily and Maddie.

These two ladies have added so much value to the work we do at Rough Draft Solutions. They are skilled writers and editors, and we are excited for you to get to know them a bit more!

Get to Know Our Editors: Emily & Maddie

Emily McPherson - Rough Draft Solutions

What made you want to become involved with Rough Draft Solutions?

Emily:

As a writer who was a year away from graduating college with a professional writing degree, I wanted to develop my skills, challenge myself, and get closer to my goal of helping businesses enhance their writing and engage with their customers in a more meaningful way. I remember watching the video on Rough Draft Solution’s website for the first time and thinking to myself, "This is exactly what I want to be doing." Also, after meeting Amanda and getting along so well, I knew we’d make a great team!

Maddie:

Amanda graduated from Ripon College, which is the same school I am attending now. I work for the Communication department at Ripon and contacted Amanda about coming back to visit campus and talk with current students about what it's like to own your own business. After meeting Amanda, I was inspired by everything she has accomplished with Rough Draft Solutions. I knew how much I could learn from her, and I am so grateful for the opportunity to be part of her team!

What have you learned about the importance of content marketing from this business?

Emily:

Once I learned more about content marketing, it almost seemed silly that companies were still implementing traditional marketing. Content marketing is taking the focus off of your business and putting it back on your customers. Customers want their problems solved with reliable solutions, and if your content focuses on your business, products, and services, your customers will do business elsewhere where they feel valued.

Maddie:

After understanding what content marketing is, it became crystal clear to me that this is the recipe to a successful business. Focusing on what customers want, rather than on the goals of your business is the best way to make meaningful connections. This solution is simple but often overlooked. You can have the most snazzy website design, brochures, and newsletters, but if the words on these marketing materials don’t resonate with your customers, they won't matter. I love the idea of content marketing, and hope businesses continue to see the value in its investment.

What would you say is your strongest area of expertise? / What do you do best?

Emily:

I would say my area of expertise is with grammar correction. Not many people enjoy studying grammar rules, but I’m a proud (and friendly) grammar geek. I am also a meticulous proofreader. I am a HUGE advocate of proofreading, proofreading again, and then having someone else review! It doesn’t hurt to triple check!!

Maddie:

I love writing, and taking on projects from start to finish. I am always interested in learning something new and trying my best to understand it thoroughly. Being able to convey this into eloquent, polished writing is one of my favorite things to do.

What have you learned about content marketing, and about yourself, through working for RDS?

Emily:

I’ve learned that content marketing is one of the most important things a business can do. Your products and services may be outstanding, but if you’re not communicating effectively with your customers, solving their problems, or giving them solutions, they’re not likely to do business with you. Content marketing opens up the door for communication and creates a more meaningful connection between your customers and your business.

Working for RDS has taught me about myself in many ways! The biggest is that I can always challenge myself. I have written for wedding band jewelers, insurance companies, coffee roasters, plastic surgeons, and other fields that I would have never imagined working with. Writing for these different industries has allowed me to develop my research skills, writing skills, and expand my general knowledge in all of these fascinating industries!

Maddie:

Working for Rough Draft Solutions has taught me that content marketing is one of the best things someone can do to help their business. It is the most effective way to engage customers because you design your business with them in mind.

Regarding myself, I have found that I am a fairly inquisitive person. We work with a variety of clients which helps expand our knowledge on a multitude of industries. I have found myself wanting to do further research on the different industries out of curiosity. With a better understanding of these businesses, I can edit content more accurately.

Maddie, what are you most excited to learn by working at RDS?

I love all of the experiences I have had with editing and writing through working for Rough Draft Solutions. I have already noticed that these projects are strengthening my writing skills. I'm looking forward to learning more about how small businesses function, and expanding my knowledge on what it's like to own a business.

Emily, if you could give one piece of content development marketing advice to a potential client, what would it be?

Find out what platforms your customers are on, what kind of content they engage with, and what problems they need to be solved. Then create quality content on a consistent basis that aligns with these customer needs and stays true to your business!
